TL;DR

  • The Nothing Phone 1 was filmed at a surprise event in Switzerland.
  • The video shows what appear to be dedicated notification lights at the back of the phone.

We just saw the rear design of the Nothing Phone 1 in an official image shared by the company. Now, we have a video showing the phone glowing in all its glory.

The company apparently held a surprise event for the Nothing Phone 1 in Switzerland and gave a few journalists a sneak peek at the phone.

A video shared by German tech journalist and YouTuber Rafael Zeier shows the Nothing Phone 1 sitting pretty inside a plexiglass enclosure. We still don’t see the front of the device, but we now know that certain areas at the back of the device glow and light up — specifically, the ring around the camera module and some components at the top and bottom. Check out the video below.

It’s unclear what triggers the lights at the back of the Phone 1. It’s highly possible these are notification or call alerts.

Many phones include the notification LED light on the front. The OnePlus 10 Pro, for instance, has something called Horizon Lights that can be programmed to light up the edges of the phone in different colors when you get a notification. The Galaxy S22 phones also have a similar edge lighting function for notification alerts.

Some OEMs like Nokia have also integrated notification lights into the power button. Others like Motorola, Xiaomi, and Razer have brand logos that serve as notification indicators.

The system on the Nothing Phone 1 looks good, though. It reminds me of the LED flashing stickers that used to be very popular in the early 2000s. They attached to the back of a phone and glowed for incoming calls.

Anyhow, what do you think of the Nothing Phone 1 now that you’ve seen it more up close? Take our poll below and drop us a line in the comments section.
