The wait is over for God of War fans. The long-awaited follow-up to the absolutely stellar 2018 reboot has a release date, and it’s set for this year.
God of War: Ragnarok is coming to PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 on Nov. 9, 2022. The news was revealed in a brief trailer Wednesday morning featuring series protagonist Kratos as he struggles to fend off a horde of monstrous foes until his now-grown son, Atreus, arrives with bow in hand. The trailer concludes with the two drawing close as they gaze into the sky at a towering wolf-like creature.
The trailer ends there, but that creature is presumably Fenrir, of Norse myth. If you played through to the end of 2018’s God of War and remember the big reveal, it’s worth noting that the mythical Fenrir connects to the legendary character at the center of that reveal. The sequel’s title, “Ragnarok,” is also notable as an end times moment in Norse myth when the old gods are wiped out and the world enters a time of darkness ahead of a great renewal.
If fancy special edition box sets are your thing, Sony’s got you covered. A subsequently released trailer highlights the “Jötnar Edition” of Ragnarok, which includes (among other things) a miniature replica of Thor’s hammer.
