Shortly before the release of Thor: Love and Thunder, news came out that a bunch of notable cameos went missing. Jeff Goldblum and Peter Dinklage were to reprise their roles as the Grandmaster and Eitri, King of the Dwarves. Additionally, there was going to be a new character portrayed by Game of Thrones’ Lena Headey. In a new interview with Insider, director Taika Waititi explained just where those cameos went and why.
“I wrote the thing, so when you cut anything it’s a little bit of a challenge to yourself because you’re like, ‘Am I not that good? Should I have seen this coming?’ But every film I’ve done I’ve probably cut the same amount,” Waititi explained. “When you go into the edit you just never know. A scene on its own could be the funniest thing or most intriguing thing, but sometimes those things if you keep them in will just make the movie screech to a halt. So you have to do what’s best for the film.”
As for what those actors think about having their scenes cut?
“If you ask any of those actors who were cut out,” Waititi said, “they all understand how it works. They have been in the game long enough.”
GameSpot editor Mason Downey noted in his review that “Love and Thunder feel[s] less like a movie and more like a scrapbook of random ideas, cut up in between some neat looking music video. Some of those ideas are great–Jane, the humor, the visuals–while others are lackluster and meaningless. It just never really comes together into a cohesive thing, which ultimately makes the whole experience ring hollow at best and confusing at worst.” So we can’t help but wonder–would leaving those characters in have made the problem more apparent, or would it have helped things stick together a little better?
As to whether or not you’ll ever get to see those scenes, don’t get your hopes up. Taika Waititi doesn’t like director’s cuts.
