Nope Review Roundup: What Critics Are Saying About Jordan Peele’s New Movie

July 21, 2022

After the sketch series Key & Peele, Jordan Peele flipped the script in 2017 with his directorial debut Get Out. That film was a critical and box office success that also remade Peele’s image into an impressively satirical and cutting horror filmmaker. Nope is poised to continue this new arc of his career, and many fans have been sold on the fact that this is a new Peele film–and that’s reason enough to see it. To wit, many fans have been avoiding trailers–or arguing that the one released in June might give too much away. Either way, many are very excited for what Peele has in store.

Nope is written and directed by Jordan Peele. The film’s cast includes Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, and Steven Yeun. The three play residents of an isolated town who witness a mysterious and abnormal event and attempt to capture video evidence.

As of this writing, Nope has an aggregate score of 77 on Metacritic, based on 39 critic reviews. Over on Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a higher 90% based on 60 reviews. These scores will likely shift as other outlets publish their takes, and note that these averages don’t take audience ratings into account.

Below, you’ll see a selection of the many reviews of Nope that have already been published.

Nope

  • Directed by: Jordan Peele
  • Written by: Jordan Peele
  • Starring: Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, and Steven Yeun
  • Premiere Date: July 22

Chicago Sun-Times – 100

“The darkly beautiful sci-fi film manages to feel bold and original while paying homage to countless great movies.” – Richard Roeper [Full review]

Uproxx – 80

“With Nope [Peele’s] proven he knows how to make an unbelievably entertaining summer alien movie that can draw the masses … while at the same time warn people about the nature and danger of spectacle.” – Mike Ryan [Full review]

ScreenCrush – 80

“But the more I sat with the film, the more I found myself returning to the sequences that work (and I mean really work), and to the way all of Nope’s stories and characters collectively create a portrait of an uncaring entertainment business that’s constantly looking for new targets to chew up. It doesn’t even spit them out. Sometimes, it devours them whole.” – Matt Singer [Full review]

Screen Rant – 80

“Nope, Jordan Peele’s movie about a bad miracle, offers a thrilling and humorous twist on Hollywood sci-fi – and serves as a love letter to filmmaking.” – Ben Kendrick [Full review]

The Boston Globe – 75

“From start to finish, you don’t know what’s coming next in Nope. When was the last time you saw a movie where that was true? Nope is deeply strange, and Jordan Peele knows exactly what he’s doing with that strangeness. It’s designedly strange. It’s coherently strange.” – Mark Feeney – [Full review]

BBC.com – 60

“Even a mediocre Jordan Peele film is better than the strongest film of an ordinary director. Nope is that mediocre film.” – Caryn James – [Full review]

The Guardian – 40

“There is something clotted and heavy about this film, with sadly not enough of the humour for which Peele justly became celebrated in his double-act days with Keegan-Michael Key. It’s not the positive response I wanted to have.” – Peter Bradshaw – [Full review]
