Facebook’s parent company Meta announced some major pricing changes to its Meta Quest 2 VR headset. Unfortunately, it’s not good news, The virtual reality device, formerly known as the Oculus Quest 2, will be raising its prices. Starting on August 1, the 128GB version gets a big $100 price jump, from $299.99 to $399.99. The 256GB version is getting a similar price increase, from $399.99 to $499.99. Meta also announced that Meta Quest accessories and even refurbished units will see price increases as well.
Why the price hike? Meta puts the blame squarely on the current supply chain crisis that’s been causing issues for over a year now for all businesses. It stated that “the costs to make and ship our products have been on the rise.” As a kind of consolation prize, the company is giving anyone who buys a Meta Quest 2 from August 1 to December 31, 2022 a free digital download copy of the popular VR rhythm action game Beat Saber.
Meta stated that it is still all in on its VR business. It says that it will release a next-generation headset, currently known by its code name Project Cambria, later in 2022. Finally, you can expect to see a number of major VR games to launch in the coming months, including a fully licensed NFL pro football game.
