Marvel Gives Creators Freedom Than Star Wars, According To Mark Ruffalo

On the heels of a debate sparked by writer-director Damon Lindelof (Watchmen, Lost) about whether there are too many Marvel movies coming out, Mark Ruffalo–who plays Bruce Banner/Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe–says the MCU is filled with greater variation and creative freedom than Star Wars. Speaking with Metro, Ruffalo explained why he thinks Marvel doesn’t need to be slowing down its output.

“If you watch a Star Wars, you’re pretty much going to get the same version of Star Wars each time,” said Ruffalo. “It might have a little bit of humor. It might have a little bit of different animation. But you’re always, really, in that same kind of world. But with Marvel you can have a whole different feeling, even within the Marvel Universe.”

Ruffalo, who is reprising his role as Hulk in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, added: “The thing Marvel has done well is that, inside the MCU, just as they do with comic books, they let a director or an actor sort of recreate each piece to their own style, their likeness. Marvel generally lets them bring that to the material.”

However, Ruffalo acknowledges that these types of debates online have a tendency to seem more heated than they really are. “It’s not something I worry about,” said Ruffalo, when asked whether there is too much Marvel content. “I understand these [arguments] run their course and then something else comes along.”

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law debuts August 18 on Disney+.
