Sony’s next Xperia product is ‘made for pro gamers’

TL;DR

  • Sony has announced an Xperia event for next week.
  • The company says it will announce a product for “pro gamers and streamers.”

Sony just launched the Xperia 5 IV a few days ago, delivering a pocket-friendly high-end Android phone. It looks like the company has another announcement to share soon though, and this one is focused on gamers.

The Sony Xperia Twitter account confirmed that it will announce a new product on YouTube on September 12 at 1PM JST (midnight ET). The mobile maker also posted a video teaser, and you can check it out below.

There’s no official word on what the company could be announcing on the day, but the teaser makes it clear that the product is “made for pro gamers and streamers.” We’re not sure what this means, but it’s definitely related to mobile devices given that Sony’s Xperia arm is hosting the launch.

We’re guessing that the announcement could be anything from a new mobile controller to a gaming phone. The company teamed up with BackBone to launch the BackBone One PlayStation Edition controller for iOS earlier this year. So it’s possible that the announcement could be an Android version of this gamepad.

A gaming phone would be more intriguing though, as Sony hasn’t released a gaming phone since 2011’s Sony Ericsson Xperia Play. That device shipped with a slide-out gamepad featuring four face buttons, a D-pad, a pair of shoulder buttons, and dual trackpads in lieu of analog sticks. So we’d love to see a successor with a similar design, 2022 specs, and access to Sony’s back-catalog of games.
