The biggest announcement to come from Disney’s annual D23 expo so far has been the first-look trailer for Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid. Directed by Rob Marshall, the reveal gave us a glimpse of acclaimed R&B singer Halle Berry as the mermaid princess Ariel.

Marshall and Bailey took to the stage during the reveal at D23 to answer questions and talk about some of the production challenges during filming, showcasing the first-ever footage of the film for the D23 crowd only, according to Variety. Attendees got to hear Bailey perform the iconic “Part of Your World,” which is heard for just a second or two in Disney’s official teaser trailer.

The Little Mermaid was first announced back in 2016 and will be another entry in Disney’s catalog of live-action renaissance era remakes. The script was written by David Magee and will star Melissa McCarthy and Javier Bardem as Ursula and King Triton, respectively. Daveed Diggs, Jacob Tremblay, and Awkwafina have also been cast as voice actors for Sebastian the crab, Flounder, and Scuttle.

The Little Mermaid hits theaters on May 26, 2023.
