When my husband and I bought our 1950s bungalow in Austin, Texas, we were two carefree, twenty-somethings. While I whole-heartedly want my home to be a creative space for my kids to conduct science experiments, there is no way that this #WFH mom can zone out with a binge-watching session after their bedtimes if I am tripping over Lego creations and unkempt work areas. Our space has to do double duty as a clutter-free space for both active kids and adults who all want to unwind after a long day of carpool lines and zoom calls.

I recently saw a Walmart study that said 70% of people are unsure of where to begin with organizing. I think they just need to spend a little more time on TikTok (there’s something so satisfying about the click clacking of filling bins, like ASMR for parents), and the #organized hauls will certainly find you. A 10-minute meditation in the mornings helps me kick off the day with a clutter-free mind, but as soon as I open that pantry door to pack lunches and backpacks my zen moment slips into a pile of disorganized crackers and pouches. Form and function are a one-two punch that really gets me excited, but my toxic trait is believing that my kids care as much about the decor and vibe of our home as I do.

I felt a massive sense of peace when I was done with my organizing overhaul – the perfect combination of everything stored neatly in a clear and easy to identify manner was really speaking my language. I also now officially understand the hype around color coordinating belongings and sorting by type. Come to find out, our home has more than enough space to store all of our family’s fall necessities. And knowing that our mornings would run smoother was pretty cathartic, too.
