Thor Love & Thunder’s Christian Bale Reveals His Gorr The God Butcher Transformation In New Clip

In a newly-released behind-the-scenes video all about crafting Christian Bale’s fearsome Gorr “The God Butcher,” the actor and others involved with the production at a high level open up about the many collaborations that took place in designing the prosthetics and performance. Thor: Love and Thunder is coming to 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on September 27 and includes a number of special features, in addition to this clip.

“Christian really wanted to be part of the process in crafting the character,” executive producer Brad Winderbaum said. “So, from an early point, we were sending him concept art.” Marvel also sent him lots of comics, which then sparked a surprising conversation between Bale with director Taika Waititi–neither felt it was appropriate for Gorr to, as Bale puts it, “run around in a G-string a whole lot.”

Later in the two-minute video, Marvel boss Kevin Feige notes that Gorr’s look and feel was very much the result of Bale working “very closely with all the departments to create that look.” Even though, as Bale ruefully notes, he didn’t realize that what their discussions were pointing towards was prosthetics for Gorr, and not CGI. “I missed that conversation,” said Bale, who regularly endured four-hour makeup sessions, but came to find those sessions to be “a great time for just getting into the headspace–and they create this character just as much as I do.”

Thor: Love and Thunder was the 29th film in the long-running Marvel Cinematic Universe and while receiving some praise for its light-hearted nature and the acclaimed performances from Bale, Portman, and Hemsworth, got some criticism for its tonal inconsistency, and you can read GameSpot’s review of Thor: Love and Thunder here.
