Somebody wasted $39,000 on an unopened iPhone from 2007

TL;DR

  • An unopened 8GB iPhone from 2007 went up for auction recently.
  • On the final day of the auction, the item sold for $39,339.60.

How much would you be willing to spend on a phone from 2007? Apparently, some people are willing to pay a lot as someone just dropped over $39,000 on an iPhone from 2007 during a recent auction.

The iPhone in question is an 8GB model that was originally released for $599 at launch. The unopened, factory-sealed handset had an initial bid of $2,500 and stayed at $10,000 for two days, according to LCG Auctions. However, as you would expect, new bids started flooding in on the final day of the auction. After a total of 28 bids, the device was sold for $39,339.60.

To confirm the iPhone is unopened, the auction website claims the packaging is in “virtually flawless” condition and states:

The factory seal is clean with correct seam details and tightness.  Labels on the reverse are correctly pristine beneath the seal.  All original — no aftermarket stickers or UPC labels on this one. Brand new, never activated.

Even if the phone is in perfect condition, it’s crazy to think that somebody would be willing to spend over $39,000 on a $600 dollar piece of outdated technology.

However, to be fair, the original iPhone was a game-changer for the mobile phone industry. It would be hard to envision what the current market would look like if Apple never released the iPhone. As such, it is a legitimate piece of technology history.

But still, $39,000 is a lot of money. And if someone was willing to spend this much for an old iPhone, just imagine what one could get selling other unopened phones. We guess the moral of the story is to save your old devices because someday there might be someone who wants to waste their money on your stuff.
