Kids everywhere are ruining their parents’ Spotify Wrapped

Being a parent is rewarding, I’m sure. But it’s also tough. You shuttle your kid around endlessly, you worry constantly, and at the end of the day — perhaps when you want to relax and listen to some music — your Spotify is ruined.

Spotify Wrapped dropped Wednesday, the annual campaign in which the platform gives its users a compilation of data about their listening habits. When you’re a parent, however, nothing is really your own. Your kid gets dibs on everything, Spotify account included. Countless parents posted laments of having their Spotify Wrapped hijacked by their kids’ favorite artists. The Encanto soundtrack, Cocomelon, and Toy Story took over the top spots of grown adults.

Spotify Wrapped is always a huge deal online, and this year was no exception. People love to post their music taste — to be clear, I am not above this vanity — and Spotify seems to revel in the virality. This year, for instance, lots of people seemed to have their mood described as Goblincore. For those not perpetually online, Goblincore is an aesthetic focused on comfort, nature, and the occult, but it left lots of people wondering what the hell was going on.

Dear Spotify Wrapped, what the f*ck is Goblincore?

It’s always fun to see what Spotify Wrapped produces for folks, whether that’s a goblin mood or a playlist completely overrun by a kid. Having a child, I’m sure, is full of sacrifices far greater than Spotify Wrapped. But it does kind of stink to not see your own preferences. To all the parents out there, maybe it’s time to give your kid their own account.
