Black Adam Hits HBO Max On December 16

DC’s Black Adam will be available for streaming on HBO Max starting December 16, according to a tweet by the network. You can check out our review roundup for the superhero movie here.

Black Adam, for the DC Cinematic Universe, is a bit like Marvel’s Deadpool–an undersung character who was brought to the big screen thanks to a big-name actor’s advocacy. The film serves as Black Adam’s origin story, and introduces the Justice Society of America–a group of heroes that predates the Justice League. Dwayne Johnson stars as the anti-hero, and is accompanied by Pierce Brosnan, Viola Davis (reprising her role as Amanda Waller), Sarah Shahi, Noah Centineo, Aldis Hodge, and Quintessa Swindell.

In October, the film earned $67 million in the US, which made it the biggest start of all time for a solo movie for Johnson. The movie made many millions more from international markets for a global first-weekend start of $140 million.

Earlier this month, there was a dust-up in the press when it was initially reported that Black Adam was a theatrical flop. According to Variety, the movie–which cost $195 million to produce, then $100 million in marketing–could lose as much as $100 million from its theatrical run. Later, Deadline reported that the film will turn a profit, which Johnson also confirmed and echoed.

Elsewhere in the DC cinematic universe, it’s been reported that Wonder Woman 3 is not moving forward in its current form. James Gunn, executive and co-head of DC Studios, clarified that plans are shifting but will soon be clarified as a comprehensive plan for the DCU is presented to Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav sometime next week.
