How to make your own Spotify time capsule

Spotify‘s new feature lets you make a time capsule of the music you’re listening to right now, which you’ll only get to look at in 2024.

Announced Wednesday, “Playlist in a Bottle” is the audio streaming service’s latest way to allow users to see a bunch of data about their listening habits that they can inevitably share on social media and spark all the memes.

Playlist in a Bottle is available for both free and premium subscribers located in the U.S., UK, Australia, France, Japan, Mexico, Argentina, Turkey, Brazil, Germany, Canada, Spain, Saudi Arabia, Chile, U.A.E., Colombia, Indonesia, Sweden, Egypt, Italy, New Zealand, Portugal, Czech Republic, Denmark, Morocco, Philippines, and Poland.

If you want to receive a time capsule, however, you need to make one by Jan. 31, as Spotify is corking it after then.

How to make your Spotify “Playlist in a Bottle”:

  1. Open the Spotify Playlist in a Bottle website on your smartphone, or open it on your desktop and scan the QR code using your phone.

  2. Select the object for your time capsule from a variety of choices: a lunch box, gumball machine, teddy bear, denim jean pocket, an acorn, or the more traditional bottle.

  3. Answer Spotify’s questions, all related to songs — these will range from “a song you’re going to kiss someone to this year” to “a song that reminds you of your favorite person.” You can randomise it or start typing in your answer as a song title, and Spotify will populate with search results. Press the + button to lock it in, and hit “Next.”

  4. After you hit “I’m done” you’ll get to take one last look at your playlist. Spotify will “seal” the capsule and only send it to you in January 2024 through the app and email.

Until next year, you’ll have to just enjoy your Spotify Wrapped playlists.
