16 Years Later, Mass Effect’s Top Gun Easter Egg Has Been Discovered

One Mass Effect fan has found an Easter egg that has been hiding in plain sight all along. Over on Twitter, user Miss Snizzabelle commented on how Mass Effect’s opening has a very similar design to the opening spread of text from Top Gun, the 1986 film that starred Tom Cruise as the hotshot fighter jet pilot.

It turns out that this is more than just a passing resemblance, as former Mass Effect director and current CEO of Humanoid Studios Casey Hudson confirmed the link. “Finally someone noticed this! I’ve been waiting so long,” Hudson tweeted.

In other Mass Effect news, development on the fifth game in the series is steadily moving forward. EA and BioWare recently teased the next chapter in the sci-fi series with updated concept art, showing off a new Mass Relay system under construction.

“One day, when we’re ready, we’ll have more to share on the next Mass Effect, so thank you for being a part of this journey with us,” Bioware said in a statement on November 7, or N7 day as it’s known to fans. “It’s exceptionally exciting for the team and we’d love to continue sharing glimpses of what we’re working on with you in the future.”

As for Top Gun, a sequel to the film debuted last year and took the box office by storm. Even though Tom Cruise wasn’t interested in making another Top Gun film, director Joseph Kosinski got him interested in the project with a tight script. At the box office, Top Gun Maverick earned $1.489 billion during its theatrical run, and would have been the highest-grossing film in the world for 2022 if James Cameron hadn’t felt the itch to return to Pandora in Avatar: The Way of Water.
