Avatar: The Way Of Water Surpasses Spider Man: No Way Home As Sixth-Biggest Film Of All Time

Five weeks into its run at the box office, Avatar: The Way of Water continues to perform better than even director James Cameron thought it might. Deadline is reporting that the sequel has overtaken Spider-Man: No Way Home to become the No. 6 biggest film ever made worldwide, and is expected to hit $2 billion by this coming weekend.

Earlier this week, it was reported that the Avatar sequel pulled in $40.6 million in ticket sales over the four-day Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend. Combined with its run in international territories, Avatar 2 has made over $1.93 billion so far. Earlier this month, Avatar: The Way of Water became among the most successful films in the history of the world–in under two weeks.

Deadline points out that although the Avatar sequel has surpassed Spider-Man: No Way Home, the Marvel film was not released in China. There was seemingly an unofficial ban in that country against characters featuring Marvel characters, and that ban is reportedly being lifted. Undoubtedly, if Spider-Man: No Way Home was released in China, it would have netted more than its $1.92 billion take.

When Avatar: The Way of Water surpasses the $2 billion milestone, it will become the sixth movie ever to reach that figure–plus director Cameron’s third, with Titanic and the original Avatar claiming similar bragging rights. Relatedly, Titanic will be back in theaters on February 10 for the film’s 25-year anniversary. The print in theaters will be 3D 4K HDR with a high frame-rate.
