Galaxy S23 series to be the first phone to use Gorilla Glass Victus 2

TL;DR

  • Corning confirmed that Samsung’s next flagship will be the first phone to sport the latest generation of Gorilla Glass.
  • The new version of Gorilla Glass improves drop performance and scratch resistance.
  • It’s likely the glass will be used to protect both sides of the device like the S22.

Looks like it’s going to be a lot harder to damage the Galaxy S23 than the Galaxy S22. Samsung’s next flagship phone will be getting the latest version of Gorilla Glass the maker confirms.

Today, Corning announced that the Samsung Galaxy S23 family will be the first smartphone to be protected by Gorilla Glass Victus 2. The reveal doesn’t come as much of a surprise since this has been a trend with Samsung being the first to get the original version of Victus and the S22 being the first to get Victus Plus.

Launched back in November 2022, this new version is said to have better survival rates when dropped on rough surfaces like concrete and asphalt. Specifically, the company states it can survive drops of up to one meter — about hip height — on concrete and asphalt.

On the Galaxy S22 series, Gorilla Glass covers both the front and the back of the handsets. Neither Corning nor Samsung elaborated in their statements if that was going to happen for the Galaxy S23 series. But it’s probable that will be the case this time around as well.

In addition, Corning revealed it achieved an Environmental Claim Validation for containing an average of 22% pre-consumer recycled content. To this, Stephanie Choi, executive VP and chief marketing officer of Samsung’s mobile experience business, stated:

We’re committed to integrating sustainability throughout our product lifecycle, working with like-minded partners such as Corning to improve performance while reducing our environmental impact.

Samsung’s Galaxy S23 will launch next Wednesday during the company’s Unpacked event. We should hear more about this and other features of the Galaxy S23 there.
