Crash injures eight people at Florida car auction

A vehicle being moved Wednesday at a Lauderdale Lakes, Fla., auto auction lot struck and injured at least eight people, sending seven of them to the hospital.

The crash occurred around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at South Florida Auto Auction, located near Fort Lauderdale, Fla., after brakes failed on the vehicle being moved, according to a news release provided by the Broward Sheriff’s Office. The police agency described the vehicle involved in the accident as “slow-moving.”

Of the eight people struck, seven were transported to a local hospital for treatment of injuries, while one refused treatment, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

Two of them were reported to have more serious injuries.

Television station WPLG Local 10 said that two were taken to the hospital as trauma-alert patients. A Broward Sheriff’s Office public information officer confirmed that to Automotive News in an email. The trauma-alert designation denotes “significant injury causing great bodily harm,” according to authorities.

A witness to the accident told WPLG Local 10 he “saw a man flying and that man fell on his head and the car that hit him rolled him over.” The vehicle then struck another person at the auction, the witness said.

The website for South Florida Auto Auction lists it as part of Auto Auction Holdings LLC, which includes another auction near Orlando, Fla., and three more in Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee.

South Florida Auto Auction didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment from Automotive News.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office said an investigation into the accident is ongoing.
