TL;DR

  • MediaTek has launched the Dimensity 7200 processor.
  • This is the first chipset in the Dimensity 7000 series.
  • Expect the first phones with the processor to launch in Q1 2023.

MediaTek‘s higher-end processor offerings consist of the flagship Dimensity 9000 series, as well as the upper mid-range Dimensity 8000 line. Now, the company has announced the first chipset in the new Dimensity 7000 series, dubbed the Dimensity 7200.

As the naming scheme implies, the Dimensity 7200 is positioned just below the upper mid-range Dimensity 8000 series of processors. That means you can expect a squarely mid-range offering here.

In saying so, the Dimensity 7200 is built on a second-generation TSMC 4nm process, in line with flagship offerings like the Dimensity 9200. As for other core specs, the SoC is powered by an octacore Armv9 CPU, consisting of two Cortex-A710 cores clocked at 2.8GHz and six Cortex-A510 cores at an unspecified frequency. The chipset also features an Arm Mali-G610 MC4 GPU.

MediaTek also confirmed to Android Authority that the chipset does indeed support 32-bit apps via the little CPU cores.

Other notable features include APU 650 machine learning silicon, a Release 16 sub-6GHz 5G modem (no mmWave here), support for 144Hz refresh rates at FHD+ display resolutions, AI-based variable rate shading, Bluetooth 5.3, and Wi-Fi 6E support.

The Dimensity 7200 also brings pretty solid camera credentials, such as 200MP single camera support, 4K HDR video capture, simultaneous dual video capture, and motion compensated noise reduction in low light.

MediaTek confirmed that the first phones with the new processor will arrive in Q1 2023. Will we see any of these phones in North America, though? Well, the company said we probably won’t see Dimensity 7200 phones in the region “in the near term.”
