TL;DR

  • Snapchat has introduced a ChatGPT-powered bot in its app.
  • It’s called My AI and is equipped to have natural conversations with Snapchat users.
  • The platform has restricted the bot’s responses to follow Snapchat’s trust and safety guidelines.

Snapchat has released a ChatGPT-powered AI bot inside its app. Called “My AI,” this is the first implementation of OpenAI’s viral chatbot in a social media app.

My AI is available to paying Snapchat users. If you have the $3.99/month Snapchat Plus membership, you will find the chatbot pinned on top of the chats tab. Snap CEO Even Spiegel told The Verge that the ChatGPT-powered service will eventually become available to all Snapchat users.

Snapchat users can also rename My AI and add a custom wallpaper to their chats with it.

If you were hoping to elicit all sorts of responses from the bot on Snapchat, you might be disappointed to know that the social media platform has limited its responses. Engineers at Snap have trained the AI to follow the company’s trust and safety guidelines to avoid swear words, violence, sexually explicit content, political opinions, and misleading information.

That said, the company notes in its press release that My AI is prone to hallucinations and can still be tricked into saying just about anything. “All conversations with My AI will be stored and may be reviewed to improve the product experience,” Snapchat notes. The company has warned users not to share any secrets with the chatbot and not to rely on it for advice.

According to Spiegel, “The big idea is that in addition to talking to our friends and family every day, we’re going to talk to AI every day.”

Snapchat posted a short clip on Twitter of how My AI wrote a Haiku, a small Japanese-style poem, about a person cheese-obsessed person in seconds. You can see the example below.

This is the second time we’re seeing ChatGPT implemented on a mobile app. Microsoft recently integrated the AI-powered bot in its Bing and Edge mobile apps. Microsoft’s impressive version also features the ability to use voice inputs to talk to the AI. Unfortunately, conversations with Snapchat’s My AI are restricted to typing. However, the company sees the bot as the beginning of a future where we can all talk to AI like it’s human.
