Apple dominates list of 2022’s top-selling phones, but what about Android?

TL;DR

  • Eight out of the top 10 phones in 2022 were iPhones, according to a new report.
  • Two budget Samsung phones were the only Android devices to crack the list.

Apple’s iPhones are constantly ranked among the top 10 most-popular smartphones each year, with seven iPhones in the top 10 in 2021. Now, it looks like Apple has gone one better in 2022.

Counterpoint Research reports that eight out of the top 10 most-popular phones in 2022 were iPhones. This marks the first time that Apple devices occupied eight of the 10 slots.

As for the top three devices, they were the iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro Max, and the iPhone 14 Pro Max respectively. Other Apple devices that made the list were the iPhone 13 Pro (fifth), iPhone 12 (sixth), iPhone 14 (seventh), iPhone 14 Pro (eighth), and iPhone SE 2022 (ninth).

The tracking company also noted the significance of the iPhone 14 Pro Max out-selling its standard and Pro stablemates. It’s also notable that the iPhone 14 Plus didn’t even crack the top 10, suggesting that the handset is indeed a sales dud for Apple.

What about Android phones?

Well, only two Android phones made the list, and they were both budget phones from Samsung. These devices were the Samsung Galaxy A13 (fourth) and the Galaxy A03 (tenth). Both of these were LTE models rather than 5G devices.

Either way, it looks like Android OEMs have an uphill battle on their hands if they want their phones to hit the top 10 in 2023. But that’s much easier said than done owing to a sagging global smartphone market.
