Someone Put ChatGPT Inside Of A Robot Dog, Which Can’t Possibly End Badly

April 26, 2023

A machine-learning engineer by the name of Santiago has integrated the ChatGPT Artificial intelligence into a Boston Dynamics robot dog (AKA Spot), creating an experimental machine to help better process the raw data that these robots gather on missions. According to Santiago, the machines run missions every day and ChatGPT allows the engineers to more efficiently query the data from those operations.

“We can now ask the robots about past and future missions and get an answer in real-time,” Santiago tweeted. “ChatGPT interprets the question, parses the files, and formulates the answer. Massive upgrade!”

Of course, this isn’t a case of simply installing ChatGPT into a robot and getting immediate results. As seen in the video, Santiago and the team had to create specific terms and routines for ChatGPT to function properly within Spot. The end-results are impressive, as combined with Google text-to-speech, Spot can provide valuable feedback and can accept commands, delivering the relevant information that the team requires from its daily walks.

These robots run automated missions every day.
Each mission uses miles-long, hard-to-understand configuration files. Only technical people can handle them.
At the end of each mission, the robots capture a ton of data. There’s no simple way to query all of it on demand.

Massive upgrade!@Levatas team, you guys rock!
Stay tuned because more is coming!

It’s AI taking over the more mundane tasks of science, though many are concerned AI’s use in areas like artwork could put human beings out of a job. AIs such as Diffusion and Midjourney have been accused of stealing from artists, and several countries are now working to create new regulations to reign in the use of this technology.

Boston Dynamics has made some significant breakthroughs with Spot and other robots developed at its labs, and while these range from cute machines picking up dance moves, there has been some controversy in this field after a video of a Boston Dynamics knockoff robot dog firing a submachine gun began circulating last year.

For now, AI is finding its feet in various fields. On the movie side, Avengers Endgame co-director Joe Russo recently spoke about the potential ways that artificial intelligence might aid filmmakers, and possibly develop to the point where it can direct its own feature-length movie.

As for how long it’ll be before Boston Dynamics and ChatGPT unveil a fully-functioning Blade Wolf straight out of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, that hopefully won’t occur before wildly implausible cybernetic enhancements and high-frequency vibration swords are more commonplace. However, the rules of nature might say otherwise.
