Chris Hemsworth Was Set On Fire For Extraction 2, And It Was Real

Extraction 2, the sequel to the very popular Chris Hemsworth movie for Netflix, contains a length one-shot sequence that features Hemsworth getting set on fire–and it was real fire, not CGI. Director Sam Hargrave told Empire Magazine that Hemsworth deserves some praise for going through what he did to get the shot.

“Hats off to Chris. It wasn’t CG fire. And he had to do it over and over,” Hargrave said. “I don’t know a lot of people, let alone Hollywood A-listers, who are gonna let you light them on fire while on camera.”

Extraction 2 features a lengthy “oner” where Hemsworth’s Tyler Rake breaks out of prison and punches people left and right as one of his arms is on fire, as seen in the first trailer. A oner is a series of long shots joined together in a seamless fashion to form a single continuous shot.

“We had a bunch of different jackets all prepped for him, with different layers,” Hargrave said about Extraction 2’s fiery oner. “We lit Chris Hemsworth on fire, and he beat up a bunch of guys all night. It was pretty incredible to watch.”

The 12-minute one-shot from the original Extraction featured director Hargrave strapping himself to the front of a car–putting his life on the line in the process–to film the very memorable scene. The sequel carries forward the one-shot tradition and the sequence is believed to be even longer and more intense than the first one.

Extraction 2 releases through Netflix on June 16. Joe Russo and Anthony Russo (The Avengers) are producing via their AGBO banner. Joe Russo wrote the movie, which also stars Golshifteh Farahani, Daniel Bernhardt, and Tinatin Dalakishvili.

The Extraction film series is based on the graphic novel Ciudad by Ande Parks.
