Honda recall: 1.2M vehicles need fix for faulty backup cameras

WASHINGTON — American Honda Motor Co. is recalling nearly 1.2 million vehicles in the U.S. because the backup camera might not display an image while in reverse.

The recall covers the 2018-2023 Honda Odyssey minivan, 2019-23 Passport midsize crossover and 2019-22 Pilot midsize crossover.

The rearview camera image in those vehicles might not appear on the display because of a faulty Media Oriented Systems Transport communication coaxial cable connector. As such, the affected vehicles fail to comply with federal safety standards for rear visibility, according to a NHTSA recall report made public Friday.

Honda told NHTSA it had received nearly 274,000 warranty claims related to the issue between May 2017 and June 8, 2023. The automaker has not received reports of injuries or death.

A Honda spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

TE Connectivity in Troy, Mich., supplies the connector, according to the report.

To fix the issue, dealers will install a straightening cover over the vehicle cable connector.

Dealers were notified June 16. Owners will be notified starting July 24.
