New Just Cause Game Canceled Before Full Release

Square Enix has announced that its free-to-play Just Cause game for mobile devices is being discontinued before its official global release.

Just Cause Mobile was announced at The Game Awards 2020 and promised a story campaign with co-op missions and competitive multiplayer. The game was made using Unreal Engine 4 and billed itself as a mobile extension of the over-the-top series, allowing players to zoom around using a parachute, a wingsuit, and a grapple hook.

The game’s website and Twitter account have now been taken offline, as Square Enix is pulling the game and opting to not see it through until release. An archived version of the game’s website states that regional early access to Just Cause Mobile closed in February this year. Like many mobile games, Square Enix soft-launched the game in some territories, and the plan was to eventually release it everywhere, though that is no longer happening.

Square Enix brand lead Anne-Lou Grosbois-Favreau is reported by VGC to have said in a note, “It is with great sadness that we are announcing the end of development for Just Cause Mobile.”

As of July 3, the game is no longer appearing on digital stores. Any allotment of in-game currency that players might have will be refunded.

The Just Cause series debuted in 2006 and saw sequels release in 2010, 2015, and 2018. The franchise was created by Avalanche Studios, which hasn’t released a game since 2019’s Rage 2. It is now working on the Xbox and PC game Contraband, though it has been some time since Avalanche or Microsoft shared any information about it.

Just Cause Mobile is not the only mobile game based on a big IP to be axed in recent times. Earlier this year, EA shut down Battlefield Mobile and Apex Legends Mobile.
