Netflix removes its $10 ‘Basic’ plan in the US

We warned you it was coming.

Netflix has officially removed its $9.99 “Basic” subscription plan for users in the U.S. and UK. The U.S. and UK changes were first noticed on Wednesday morning by Cord Busters.

As Mashable previously reported, the removal of its lowest-priced ad-free tier was hinted at last month when Netflix dropped the “Basic” option for its customers in Canada.

Much like how it worked with the Canadian roll-out, users in the U.S. and UK who are still subscribed to the $9.99 “Basic” plan may continue to do so, as long as they don’t change their subscription plan or cancel their account. The plan provided users with all of the ad-free benefits of a Netflix subscription, however, the account was limited to watching on just one device at a time.

New users will now have the option to either fork over $6.99 for the ad-supported plan or $15.49 for a Netflix “Standard” subscription, which adds one extra device to the account for simultaneous viewing. The plan also allows users to share their account with one individual outside of the account holder’s household.

Netflix often tests out new features and subscription changes in limited markets before rolling them out more broadly. For example, before Netflix cracked down on password sharing and started charging all users to add members to their account who lived outside their household, they first tested the option months earlier in countries like Chile, Peru, and Costa Rica.
