The Exorcist: Believer’s Second Trailer Teases Regan MacNeil’s Fate

The Exorcist: Believer has released its second trailer ahead of its premiere on October 6, with new footage teasing the sequel’s links to the 1973 film. With Ellen Burstyn’s protective mother Chris MacNeil returning for the rebooted sequel, it looks like her daughter Regan might also have more to her story.

The new trailer opens with a scene between MacNeil and Katherine, one of the two girls whose posession is the focus of the film. After MacNeil reveals that the two have met before, the demon taunts her asking “are you looking for Regan?” before revealing that “she burns in hell.” This is the first time we’ve seen Regan mentioned in the sequel, and while she’s unlikely to make an appearance in the film–as the actress Linda Blair stated she hasn’t been asked to reprise her role–it seems like she will still be a motivating force for MacNeil.

The Exorcist: Believer is the first of a planned Exorcist trilogy from Universal in partnership with Blumhouse, with the trilogy acting as a direct sequel to the original 1973 film–ignoring previous sequels and spin-offs.

The movie focuses on two girls who exhibit signs of demonic posessions after going missing in the woods for three days. Leslie Odom Jr. stars as Victor Fielding, the concerned single father of one of the girls. Fielding seeks help from MacNeil, due to her experience with similar events.

The trailers have revealed that MacNeil is familiar with this specific demon, meaning it’s likely to once again be Pazuzu, who was named in the original film. The latest trailer has also revealed that the demon is offering the parents a choice–one of the two posessed girls can live, but the other must die, and the choice is up to them.

The Exorcist: Believer will premiere on October 6, after being moved up a week to avoid clashing with Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour concert movie.
