Ryan Gosling Jokes That Barbie 2 Would Need To Feature A “Husky Ken”

Ryan Gosling has addressed rumors about a potential sequel to the blockbuster film Barbie, asserting that he’s in the dark about any such project. Speaking at London’s BFI Southbank alongside co-star America Ferrera, Gosling dismissed a fan’s inquiry about a sequel, saying (via Variety), “Oh, I’m not going anywhere near that. We really know nothing.”

During the conversation, Gosling explored the concept of a Ken-centric spinoff with a playful twist on the character, asking, “Can it be a husky Ken? Can I play Husky Ken, like Sandwich Ken? Can I play that Ken next time?” All joking aside, Ferrera stepped in to clarify that the filmmakers didn’t initially plan to create a franchise, making any talk of a sequel purely speculative, and that they “really know nothing.”

This is all in line with director Greta Gerwig’s recent vague response to the notion of a Ken-focused follow-up during a recent interview with 60 Minutes. Gerwig neither confirmed nor denied the possibility, saying, “I mean, the truth is, you know…I guess we’ll see? We had way too much material for Ken. We would write, and write and write.”

As discussions about the potential sequel unfold, Variety reported Mattel executives expressing enthusiasm for the expansive opportunities within the Barbieland universe. The brand is seen as “very broad and very elastic” in terms of potential storytelling avenues.

Margot Robbie, who plays Barbie in the movie, was notably absent from the London event. Gosling acknowledged Robbie’s non-attendance, joking, “That disappointment you feel that Barbie’s not here–that’s Ken’s life.”

Barbie will finally be available to stream on Max starting December 15, alongside an ASL version.
