Asus is adding onto the rapidly accelerating market for handheld gaming PCs.

About a year after launching the ROG Ally as a Windows-based competitor to the Steam Deck, Asus is back with its own version of the Steam Deck OLED. According to the Verge, this new version of the ROG Ally will be called the ROG Ally X.

Asus ROG Ally X: Everything we know

The Asus ROG Ally X be an iteration of the previous model rather than a straight up sequel. After all, it’s the ROG Ally X, not the ROG Ally 2.

Mashable Light Speed

What that means is the AMD Z1 Extreme chipset and 120Hz display powering the original ROG Ally are still intact and unchanged, but there are other internal improvements. Asus SVP Shawn Yen told The Verge to expect more than a “30 to 40 percent” increase in battery life, for example, without giving away the actual specs of the device ahead of its June 2 unveiling.

The device could also allow for a wider variety of SSD upgrades and increased repairability, but again, we’ll have to wait a few weeks to find out more details.

As much as I love the Steam Deck OLED, I’m down for more competition in the handheld PC space. It’s just wild to think that almost nobody played PC games this way two years ago.
