Netflix’s ‘The Decameron’ trailer promises Bacchanalian excess during the Black Death

Who’s up for a Bacchanalian bout of 14th century excess in the northern Italian countryside? Following a debaucherous teaser, Netflix’s trailer for The Decameron promises just that.

Based on Giovanni Boccaccio’s 14-story collection nicknamed l’Umana commedia (The Human Comedy), the eight-episode series The Decameron follows the exploits of a dastardly group of nobles and their servants in 1348 — the year of the terrible Black Death plague in Florence. Retreating from the city to their sprawling villa, the aristocracy enjoy the spoils of a luxe vacation while the commoners suffer. But the fun’s going to run out some time, especially when survival’s on the table.

Created by Teenage Bounty Hunters‘ Kathleen Jordan with Fargo‘s Michael Uppendahl directing, the series has a stacked cast including Leila Farzad, Zosia Mamet, Tony Hale, Lou Gala, Amar Chadha-Patel, Karan Gill, Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Jessica Plummer, Tanya Reynolds, and Douggie McMeekin.

The Decameron is streaming on Netflix from July 25.
