Nintendo World Championships Launch-Day Buying Guide – Walmart Finally Has The Deluxe Set

Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition Deluxe Set is available now (July 18) at select major retailers. The nostalgia-fueled ode to the NES and the real-world Nintendo World Championships in 1990 is in stock at Walmart, Best Buy, Target, and GameStop for $60. If you regularly buy first-party Nintendo Switch games, you may be somewhat surprised to see Nintendo World Championships available at Walmart. For the past couple months, Walmart as well as Amazon have not had most upcoming Switch games available for preorder, including Nintendo World Championships. Amazon still isn’t carrying the retro minigame compilation, but it’s nice to see a brand-new Switch release available online and in stores at Walmart.

Where to buy Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition, Deluxe Set — $60

  • Buy at Walmart — Free delivery (July 20) | Order online, pickup today
  • Buy at Best Buy — Free delivery (July 20) | Order online, pickup today
  • Buy at Target — Free delivery (July 21) | Order online, pickup today
  • Buy at GameStop — $7 delivery unless order total is $79+ | Order online, pickup today

Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition includes over 150 minigames spread across 13 NES titles. This includes seeing how fast you can complete the first level of Super Mario Bros, how quickly you can eat an enemy in Kirby’s Adventure, and defeating as many Octoroks as possible in The Legend of Zelda. If you have a Nintendo Switch Online membership, you can compare your scores to players around the world. The big selling point of this deluxe set is its lineup of collectibles, as you’ll get a gold NES game cartridge replica, 13 art cards, and a set of pins.

If you don’t have an NSO membership, you can still enjoy local multiplayer for up to eight players. After each round, you’ll receive a letter rating to let you know how well you’ve performed. You’ll earn in-game coins based on your performance, which can then be used to unlock additional challenges.

If you don’t care about the extras, you can pick up the digital version for $30 via the Switch eShop.

Here’s a look at all 13 games in the collection:

  • Balloon Fight
  • Donkey Kong
  • Excitebike
  • Ice Climber
  • Kid Icarus
  • Kirby’s Adventure
  • Metroid
  • Super Mario Bros.
  • Super Mario Bros. 2
  • Super Mario Bros. 3
  • Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels
  • The Legend of Zelda
  • Zelda II: The Adventure of Link

The collection is meant to be played with NES controllers, but some great alternatives to the $60 pair only available to Switch Online members include the classic gray 8BitDo SN30 Pro Wireless Controller for $40.49 (was $45). If you like translucent controllers, you can snag the SN30 Pro in translucent green for $40 (was $45). You can also pick up the 8BitDo Pro 2 for $50. The Pro 2 retains the retro look of the SN30 Pro but adds modern-day handles similar to the DualSense controller.
