The DIY repair gurus cracked open both the base and Pro models, providing an up-close look at what’s powering Apple’s latest flagship, complete with x-ray scans and detailed, step-by-step guides—just in case you’re feeling adventurous enough to crack it open yourself.
One of the most intriguing finds from iFixit’s deep dive? The new electricity-activated adhesive securing the iPhone 16’s battery. Unlike previous models, which relied on the old pull-tab method to dislodge the battery, Apple opted for a cutting-edge solution—an adhesive that dissolves when hit with a low electrical charge (as little as 30 volts). It’s a slick approach that could make battery swaps significantly easier for both DIYers and professionals.
But there’s a trade-off. In a subtle but notable omission, iFixit pointed out that the iPhone 16 lacks a millimeter-wave antenna, sacrificed to make space for the new Camera Control button. While it’s unlikely to be a dealbreaker, you might experience the occasional hiccup in your Wi-Fi connectivity.
Despite that minor compromise, iFixit’s verdict is overwhelmingly positive.
