Jimmy Kimmel tears up during emotional monologue about the L.A. wildfires

Jimmy Kimmel Live! is back on TV after production paused last week due to the L.A. wildfires — and the host’s returning monologue was an emotional one.

“As you know it has been a very scary, very stressful, very strange week here in L.A. where we work, where we live, where our kids go to school,” Kimmel says in the clip above, tears in his eyes. “Many of us had to leave our homes in a hurry, some of us lost our homes.”

The host goes on to talk about the huge impact the fires have had on the people he knows in the city.

“It’s been terrible. Everyone who lives in this city knows someone – most of us multiple people – families, friends, colleagues, neighbours, whose house burned down,” Kimmel says. “And the truth is we don’t even know if it’s over. We had 100 mph winds fuelling this nightmare. As of tonight, the winds are back. I think I speak for all of us when I say it has been a sickening, shocking, awful experience. But it has also been, in a lot of ways, a beautiful experience because once again, we see our fellow men and women coming together to support each other.”

24 people have died in the wildfires, and over 90,000 are under evacuation orders.
