The Wheel of Time Season 3, episode 4 introduced an incredibly powerful new object: the Sakarnen, a sa’angreal that serves as the female counterpart to the sword Callandor. (This is a change from Robert Jordan’s original novels, where the Sakarnen can only be used by men.)

In episode 4, Aes Sedai Moiraine (Rosamund Pike) found the Sakarnen in the city of Rhuidean, within Avendesora, the Tree of Life. Now, in an exclusive clip from Season 3, episode 5, we get to see the Sakarnen in action.

In the above clip, Moiraine channels with the Sakarnen for the first time, sending large swaths of the One Power soaring across the Aiel Waste. It’s one of the most extraordinary displays of power we’ve witnessed on The Wheel of Time so far, but it seems like it comes with a price. Moiraine appears to be wrestling with the Sakarnen at times, almost collapsing into the arms of her Warder, Lan (Daniel Henney), once she’s finished.

“What is that, Moiraine?” he asks.

“What did it feel like to you?” she asks, referencing their bond.

“Euphoric,” Lan replies. But when prompted further, there’s cause for concern. To him, the use of the Sakarnen also felt “like hunger and thirst, but deeper.”

Will he and Moiraine pay an even steeper price for this kind of power?

The Wheel of Time Season 3 is now streaming on Prime Video, with a new episode every Thursday.
