At long last, A Minecraft Movie is finally in theaters. It’s been over a decade since it was first revealed that Warner Bros. was working with Mojang Studios on adapting the title for the big screen, with various writers and directors attached over the years. Now, with Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre director Jared Hess at the helm, the movie is a reality–and leaves room for potential sequels, too. With that in mind, we need to parse through that ending, including the post-credits scene that included one very interesting appearance.
Warning: The following contains full spoilers for A Minecraft Movie. If you haven’t seen the film, you should stop reading now. Otherwise, you will be spoiled. Without further ado, let’s dig into the movie’s ending.
The end
Once Steve (Jack Black) and his friends defeat Margosha and her piglin army, saving the Overworld from the Nether creatures, it’s time to return to the real world. While Steve had planned to stay in the Overworld he’s grown to call home, he’s ultimately convinced by his fellow humans to return with them (and his cubic wolf, Dennis).
Back on Earth, we see that everyone’s lives have gotten better–a true happy ending. Henry (Sebastian Hansen) has perfected the rocket pack he was tinkering with early in the movie, using it to fly to school. Natalie (Emma Myers) has found her calling as a self-defense instructor after battling piglins in the Overworld adventures. Dawn (Danielle Brooks) has given up her real estate business to focus on her mobile zoo idea, which somehow seems to be thriving. And then there’s Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (Jason Momoa).
Introduced early in the movie as a washed up video game champion with a failing store, his fortunes have changed. He’s now partnered with Steve to reinvent his aging video game store, which now has a distinctly more Minecraft-flavored theme. No longer stuck in the past, Garbage Man is thriving alongside his friends. Everyone gets a well-deserved happy ending, including Vice Principal Marlene (Jennifer Coolidge).
After spending most of the movie on a very long date with an Overworld villager who made his way into the real world, the two now seem happy together–and the villager also speaks human now. Providing the voice is none other than What We Do in the Shadows star Matt Berry in one of the movie’s best surprises.
The post-credits scene
Once the credits have rolled, we are treated to one more scene. In it, Steve returns to his original home. He knocks on the door, to find it now inhabited by a woman with red hair. It turns out he’s there for a chest that was left in the attic–which is still there. The important bit comes during their introductions, though. The woman reveals she is Alex, otherwise known as the female Minecraft player character.
Alex was added to the game in 2014 to act as Steve’s counterpart and, according to Hess, is a sign of things potentially to come.
“[The world of Minecraft is] endless,” He told GameSpot. “I mean, there’s so many biomes, so many crazy, amazing characters and creatures we haven’t even touched on. And, you know, Alex [is] one of the massively iconic characters, right on equal ground with Steve. You can’t fit everything in one movie, so you’ve got to kind of parse it out thinking ahead. But if this one does well, man we’re excited to jump back in.”
Torfi Frans Olafsson, senior director of Minecraft entertainment and online, echoed that sentiment, adding, “In all seriousness, not only do we have other dimensions, other mobs, but also other ways of playing Minecraft, because Minecraft is played in so many ways, by so many people. So the opportunities are really, really endless.”
It’s worth noting that while we see Alex’s trademark red hair in the scene, her face is never shown. So while there are certainly plans for the character, she seemingly has not been cast at this point.
A Minecraft Movie is in theaters now. GameSpot’s review of the film gave it a 7, noting, “A Minecraft Movie is exactly what you think it is based on its trailers. It’s a big, cartoony live-action movie, filled with silly jokes, Minecraft references, and an oddly surreal Minecraft world, complete with the game’s various creatures and our human heroes.”
