Earlier this week, A Minecraft Movie reached another milestone when it hit $800 million worldwide, which is almost twice as much as this year’s second-highest grossing film, Captain America: Brave New World. Now, Jack Black’s song from A Minecraft Movie is charting on Billboard’s Hot 100, and it just set a record too.
Steve’s Lava Chicken song, as performed by Black in the film, entered the Billboard list at No. 78. By pulling off that feat, Black’s 34-second jingle is now the shortest song to ever chart on Billboard. In the context of the movie, Steve (Black) spontaneously breaks out into the song as he demonstrates what happens when chickens are combined with hot lava to become a tasty treat.
This isn’t Black’s first video game movie tune to make the list. Peaches–Black’s breakout song from The Super Mario Bros. Movie–arrived on Billboard’s Hot 100 at No. 83. That was the first time Black ever charted as a solo artist, as his prior appearance on the list was with his Tenacious D partner, Kyle Glass. Given Black’s success with these video game tunes, perhaps Borderlands should have had his character, Claptrap, singing a song as well.
The irony is that Black was reportedly not the first choice to play Steve in A Minecraft Movie. His antics in the film may have also inspired some rambunctious audience reactions. Police officers have been called to some screenings. That led to movie theaters issuing some Minecraft Movie disclaimers along with a plea for visitors to stop throwing popcorn.
Warner Bros. was inspired by those reactions to launch Block Party Editions of A Minecraft Movie starting this Friday, May 2. These special screenings encourage fans to sing-along to Black’s song, shout out his lines, and be rowdier than usual.
A Minecraft Movie is now playing in theaters, but the Limited Edition Steelbook and a Walmart-exclusive edition with a DIY Crafting Table are already available for preorder.
