Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has reached another impressive milestone, as the game has sold 2 million copies in just 12 days. Developer Sandfall Interactive and publisher Kepler Interactive revealed the news in a social media post, thanking fans for their support thus far. “We’ve watched in awe as so many of you began your journey. Feeling every step, every emotion, every revelation alongside you. To those just joining us: welcome. Tomorrow comes,” the message reads.
The game has also been popular on Steam, and on May 4, it reached a new peak with 145,063 concurrent players (via SteamDB). What makes this even more noteworthy is that Steam only accounts for a portion of the playerbase, as the game is also available through the Epic Games Store and the Xbox storefront for PC, as well as Xbox Series X|S, and PS5. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was a day-one launch for Game Pass on PC and Xbox Series X|S, arriving shortly after Oblivion Remastered.
Kepler Interactive’s Matthew Handrahan recently commented on the two games launching so close to each other, explaining that the publisher always believed in Expedition 33’s “very specific identity” as being a key factor that would help set it apart.
The game–which is partly the product of boredom and wanting to put a fresh spin on JRPGs–has been critically acclaimed for its exquisite design, emotional storytelling, and fusion of turn-based RPG combat with souls-like influences. “There are minor pitfalls in relation to its narrow exploration and some quality-of-life issues, but these missteps aren’t enough to significantly detract from a game with all the makings of an RPG classic,” Richard Wakeling wrote in GameSpot’s Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 review.
