YouTube’s new playlist voting turns partygoers into collaborating DJs

May 15, 2025

Summary

  • YouTube now allows collaborative playlist voting, letting party guests or road trip passengers control the music.
  • Playlist voting’s launch was delayed for extended testing, but is now officially available and will continue rolling out gradually.
  • Users can easily enable playlist voting by hitting the “Collaborate” toggle on unlisted or public playlists they own, and sharing the resulting “Invite collaborators” link with potential voters.

House parties and road trips don’t always have dedicated DJs these days. YouTube’s vast collection of media makes it easier to access some of the most obscure tunes you could imagine, but without somebody on the decks, who would take your request?

Everybody at the party or in the car, that’s who. At least, that’s the idea behind the collaborative playlist voting YouTube just added. It’s been a long time coming, but you can now make a playlist, invite hordes of people to check it out, and let them sort out what they want to hear. No more relying on a shuffle button that doesn’t really shuffle, or even scarier, your own DJing abilities (Source: TeamYouTube on Twitter/X).

YouTube Music has offered similar collaborative playlists for years.

An October 2024 post on the official YouTube blog outlined some super-convenient changes in the works. Most, like an enhanced mobile miniplayer and improved playlist creation tools, saw timely rollouts.

Playlist voting apparently needed more time in the oven. As recently as a month ago, social media users periodically shared experiences like, “I turned on some weird voting option, and it screwed up my whole playlist,” which indicates YouTube did well to push back the launch in favor of more A/B testing. The phased rollout is still underway, but as of today’s announcement, at least we know the feature is finally official.

To illustrate how novel, fun, and easy it is to use the new feature, YouTube put together this helpful Short that could have been ripped straight out of Glee. As cool as it may be for jocks like us to rag on performance theater, at least YouTube’s still producing videos using real people, and does a good job with this one explaining how live voting lets anybody with an invite contribute to curating life’s soundtrack in real time.

Like with any feature that allows live, grassroots contribution, there’s always a potential pitfall or two. It’ll help to build hype for the music before the road trip or social gathering kicks off, or else you might end up organizing the playlist yourself anyway. And you’ll want to be careful to give voters a wide selection of good music to pick from, so be prepared for vote-ordered playlists to start off longer than what might feel right.

Enabling playlist voting is simple. Make sure the playlist is either public or unlisted (not private) and toggle on the “Collaborate” slider. Tap the share button, copy the “Invite collaborators” link, and send it to anybody whose musical judgment you trust. Deciding on that last part could be the hardest step.
