Walmart’s $30 Onn 4K Plus outperforms Google’s $100 TV Streamer in early benchmarks

The Google TV Streamer is a good device. When we reviewed it, we appreciated that it offered a great viewing experience, and that it was quick and versatile, thanks to Google including all the right hardware. We also had some doubts as well, that maybe this device wasn’t all it needed to be in order to future-proof itself.

Review: The Google TV Streamer is a better Chromecast, but not much more

At twice the price of Google’s last 4K streamer, I expected better

Of course, we won’t really know just how bad it is until time passes, but a Google TV Streamer competitor is now drawing some more attention after its release, not only for its cheaper price, but also because it apparently offers a lot better performance when it comes to the numbers.

Sometimes these things don’t matter to normal consumers

At least, that’s what AFTVnews is sharing, after it put Walmart’s Onn 4K Plus through some benchmark tests. Now before we share the details, it’s important to note that these types of tests don’t always reveal the full story. Of course, it is interesting to see what Walmart’s budget streamer can bring to the table when it comes to the raw numbers, just because it’s much cheaper than Google’s own streaming device.

In fact, Walmart’s Onn 4K Plus pretty much sits at the top of the list, landing behind some of the best streaming devices ever made, like the Amazon Fire TV Cube and Nvidia Shield. As far as the numbers, the news outlet shares that the Onn 4K Plus delivers Geekbench scores that sit at 1146 for the single-core test, and 3131 for the multi-core test.

If you’re curious, the Google TV Streamer comes in a bit lower, with a 917 single-core, and 2527 multi-core score. The news outlet also shows off more scores as well, painting a picture that the Onn 4K Plus is quite a bit more capable, when it comes to the hardware inside. Again, these are all just numbers, and the Google TV Streamer did fine in our tests, providing a great experience out of the box.

The bigger headline here is that we’re seeing heavy competition from Walmart with its streaming devices that come in at a fraction of the price when compared to Google’s TV Streamer. But this should come as no surprise though, because we know that Walmart has been doing some great things in this space with its Onn series products for years. And we loved the 4K Pro model that was released last year.

If you’ve been thinking about grabbing either model, we recommend doing some research before you buy, and considering which is going to be better for your needs. Also, you’ll want to consider just how long these devices will be supported.
