Google Messages update lets you take back that regretful text

Signs of Google working on a “Delete for everyone” option in Google Messages first appeared way back in late March this year. Then, last month, the company rolled out the feature to select users on the beta channel, bringing its messaging app one step closer to WhatsApp and Telegram. Google is now making the feature live on the stable channel, allowing Messages users to unsend sent text messages.

The “Delete for everyone” option will appear in all your conversations in Google Messages going forward (via Reddit). However, you cannot delete messages sent before the feature rolled out. Additionally, the ‘Delete for everyone’ option will only appear for RCS chats, not regular text messages.

Like WhatsApp and Telegram, to delete a sent message in Google Messages, long-press on it and tap the trash icon from the toolbar at the top. A pop-up will then appear, asking whether you want to delete the message just for yourself or for everyone.

When the feature was rolled out in the beta channel, it only worked in group chats. But that’s not the case now, as you can delete texts sent to both individual and group chats. When a message is deleted, a “Message deleted” placeholder takes its place.

Initial reports indicated that Google would provide a 15-minute window to unsend sent text messages. However, that does not seem to be the case, as I can delete texts almost 40 minutes after sending them.

Alongside the ability to delete sent messages, Google is also rolling out the other Messages features it announced as part of the June 2025 Feature Drop. This includes the ability to snooze notifications from a chat. You can snooze conversations for 1 hour, 8 hours, 24 hours, or Always. There’s also an option to ensure that you still receive notifications from a snoozed conversation when someone @mentions you.

Other new features include the ability to customize the icon of an RCS group conversation and the addition of an RCS label next to contact names when creating a new group chat. The latter will easily help you determine which contacts have RCS enabled and add them to the conversation.
