How my Pixel 9 became my secret weapon against Sunday dread

June 29, 2025

Nobody likes the end of the weekend. Sunday dread is real, and it brings a familiar feeling of apprehension about early wake-ups, Monday meetings, and more.

I used to spend hours sorting through emails, messy calendars, and half-finished to-do lists, unsure how to get ahead of my task list. However, switching to the Google Pixel 9 helped.

Behind the minimalist interface lies a range of nifty features that streamlined my routine and helped me take back control. Here’s what helped.

The Google Pixel 9 makes me question if I need to go Pro

The Pixel 9 has everything most people want from a phone

At a Glance and Focus Mode

Adding quiet structure to my routine

Productivity, or the lack of it, starts at the home screen, and the Pixel 9’s At a Glance widget is a prime example of how a simple feature can remove the friction from your daily workflow.

Lately, I have used the At a Glance widget more intentionally, not just to see weather updates but to surface the exact snippets I need. Think package arrivals, calendar entries, commute times, and more.

On Sunday evenings, a glance at the widget can nudge me into planning mode without overwhelming me. A glance reminds me of a morning workout or the commute time for a meeting.

Since it also works with work profiles, the At a Glance widget has been an excellent value add for planning my upcoming day by giving me a heads-up about calendar blocks and events.

Then there’s Focus Mode. It’s an excellent value add-on any day of the week, but I created a dedicated profile for Sunday evenings. This is when my Pixel 9 automatically switches over into a custom digital wind-down routine.

Focus Mode removes distractions like social media and shopping apps, and surfaces shortcuts to my notes and calendar apps. This helps me prepare for the upcoming week.

Minimal friction, maximum efficiency

Circle to Search on Google Pixel 9

Smaller additions strewn throughout the Pixel experience further help me prepare for the upcoming week. For example, Circle to Search has become a critical tool in my daily routine.

One use is meal prep. It’s an important part of my Sunday routine to ensure I don’t waste time during the week thinking about and preparing lunches and dinners. Still, I don’t always want to stick to my tried-and-tested recipes.

That’s where Circle to Search comes in. While looking up recipes, I can quickly pull up a visual search, identify items and products, save them, share them, and order the products online.

The tool also comes in handy while catching up on my Sunday newsletters. When I spot a reference to an interesting word or fact, I use Circle to Search, select it, and the results are right there. No app switching needed.

The time savings between using Circle to Search and a manual search may not be significant for a single query, but it adds up over time. More importantly, I find that it helps keep me in a flow state.

Similarly, the Google Recorder app is part of my Sunday rituals. I use it as a digital brain dump, talking through my task lists, unfinished tasks, as well as mundane things like shopping or things I want to check out.

Think of Google Recorder as a voice-based digital diary. The phone transcribes everything with excellent accuracy, and the built-in AI summaries make it easy to turn that information into a usable chunk of data. I can copy it and move it into Obsidian or make task lists in Google Keep.

Striving towards inbox zero

Sundays also include cleaning up my inbox. While inbox zero is a myth, I try to get as close to it as possible. While we’re all aware of the standard swiping left and right to archive or delete, I use smart replies and smart compose to get on top of things.

Not every email needs a highly personal approach. Think basic check-ins or meeting requests. Similarly, I use Gemini’s email summarization feature to catch the gist of interesting newsletter subscriptions and research materials that I subscribe to. If it interests me, I read on further. If it doesn’t, I archive it.

Those summaries also extend to note-taking. In addition to the voice recorder, I use Google Keep to keep track of notes throughout the week. Sunday is when I scroll through them, label them, or archive them.

It’s not the most tech-forward approach. But not everything needs to be.

A system that almost runs itself and keeps me on track

With this system in place, the cognitive load I associated with Sundays no longer exists. I’m on point with emails, my task lists, my non-work task lists, calendar appointments, and my meal prep.

I have a system that works great for my needs and helps me stay in the flow state, right here on my Pixel 9. And most importantly, reasonably automated.

The Pixel 9 is Google’s most affordable 2024 flagship, making a few compromises when compared to the Pixel 9 Pro and Pro XL while retaining the Google smarts the lineup has become known for. An upgraded 48MP ultra-wide camera is paired with a 50MP main shooter, and the selfie cam added autofocus. All of this comes with new Gemini AI features and a 2,700-nit Actua display for exceptional value at its price point.
