Samsung’s new foldables are having their renaissance moment, and that could show in pre-order figures

Samsung’s 2024-released Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 didn’t perform as well as the company might have expected. Welp, who am I kidding? I’m sure Samsung itself didn’t expect the line to sell like hotcakes, primarily because the foldables only offered iterative upgrades, and carried a $100 price hike over their respective predecessors.

Increasing competition likely played a role too, prompting the South Korean tech giant to actually innovate with its new Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7.

I used the Galaxy Z Fold 7, and it’s my dream big-screen foldable

Thin is most definitely in

Samsung seems to have gotten its spark back with its new foldables. The Flip line finally has an edge-to-edge cover display that boasts a 120Hz refresh rate and 2,600 nits of peak brightness. The Z Fold 7, on the other hand, has made solid progress in making the inevitable crease disappear, paired with its overall slim folded frame that’s as thin as some slab phones.

Consumers care about those details, and that’s why Samsung’s last-gen foldables didn’t quite fly off the shelves. This time around, with renewed focus on upgrades, we could see the Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7 sell extremely well, so much so that the generation might shatter previous pre-order records.

If it had teeth, it’d be dangerous

Reports stemming from Korea’s The Fact (h/t: SammyGuru), quoting industry analysts, suggest that the new foldables could break the pre-order record (for Korea) that was previously set by the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5. The 2023-released series sold exceptionally well, primarily because of the Z Flip 5 finally adopting a bigger cover display and the Z Fold 5 going with a waterdrop/gapless hinge.

Upgrades are equally monumental this time around, prompting analysts to believe that the new generation can surpass the 1.02 million pre-orders number achieved by the 2023-released foldables. Bolstering that idea is the fact that over 160,000 had already signed up for pre-order notifications 14 days prior to the Unpacked event.

Pre-order figures are expected to be positive for the western world too, especially since early impressions of the new foldables have mostly been positive. The South Korean tech giant is offering its usual free 512GB upgrade, paired with trade-in credits as high as $1,000, which, too, should help drive sales.
