Samsung’s Project Moohan and ‘Galaxy Z Trifold’ confirmed for 2025 release

Samsung hasn’t emptied its innovation tank with the recently launched Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7. Although the two foldables are selling well, outpacing previous generations when it comes to raw pre-order numbers, the South Korean tech giant has its sights set on debuting an all-new foldable within the year.

We’ve heard whispers about Samsung’s first tri-fold device being in development, and although we knew that it was coming, we weren’t sure how far along the development cycle the tech giant was. Now, as part of its Q2 2025 earnings call, Samsung has essentially confirmed that the trifolding device is coming within the next five months.

For reference, the earnings call has already given us confirmation that the upcoming Galaxy S25 FE will be released “earlier” than usual, which means we might be looking at a late August or early September launch for the Fan Edition device. Similarly, the Tab S11 series is poised to be released roughly around the same time too. Now, add a tri-folding device to the mix, and the tech giant has enough releases to justify another Unpacked event (via 9to5Google).

Oh, and we haven’t forgotten about Project Moohan (and the same goes for Samsung). We “aim to lead the market by expanding our ecosystem through innovative form factors like the upcoming TriFold device and our first XR headset,” said the tech giant during the earnings call shared by SeekingAlpha.

We are also preparing to introduce next-generation innovative products, including our XR headset and TriFold smartphone this year.

This essentially confirms that users will be able to get their hands on Samsung’s Android XR-powered AR/VR headset and the tech giant’s first triple-folding device within 2025. Whether the two devices go on sale globally remains to be seen. If early reports are to be believed, I’d suggest users outside of Korea and China to not get too excited just yet.

And it’ll have competition right out the gate

From what we already know, Samsung’s trifold, instead of offering a MateXT-like S/Z-shaped fold, will opt for a G-shaped implementation where the device folds inwards from both sides. The device will sport a titanium frame for durability, paired with the latest Snapdragon chip (potentially tweaked for Galaxy) for fast performance. The device will reportedly be named the Galaxy Z Trifold.

Project Moohan, on the other hand, is being developed jointly by Samsung, Qualcomm, and Google, and will run on the later’s new AndroidXR operating system. Gemini will serve as the brains of the operation for simple controls, while dedicated controllers will provide precise input for more complex tasks like gaming.
