Samsung’s One UI 8 beta program is live, although not all Galaxy handset owners can participate right now. While the South Korean tech giant will open the beta program for more handsets other than the Galaxy S25 in the coming weeks, you can try the Stable One UI 8 right now if you own one of Samsung’s newest foldable phones: Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7.
While both the foldables run One UI 8 out of the box, the software experience isn’t the same on these devices due to their difference in form factor. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 tilts more towards multitasking and productivity, and it’s so much better than all its predecessors, thanks to One UI 8’s 90:10 multitasking split. If that wasn’t enough, a One UI 8 bug has hit the Galaxy Z Fold 7 to take the multitasking experience to the next level.
A weird One UI 8 bug on Galaxy Z Fold 7 tries to copy a feature from OnePlus
One of the major benefits of a book-style foldable phone like the Galaxy Z Fold 7 over the clamshell ones like the Galaxy Z Flip 7 is superior multitasking. However, multitasking is one such area where its rival, OnePlus, does a better job with its Open Canvas feature.
While we’ve long been asking Samsung to learn from OnePlus‘ Open Canvas, the company managed to implement it only partially in One UI 8 with the 90:10 split. On the brighter side, we now have enough evidence to believe that an Open Canvas-style feature may not be far away for the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and other One UI 8-supported foldable phones.
As first spotted by Reddit user u/traneric1, the One UI 8 on the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is hit with a bug, allowing users to run up to three apps simultaneously in split-screen view. This is being labeled as a bug and not a feature because it triggers only when you open two apps in the 90:10 split view and then open and back out of the Edge Panel settings page (via SammyGuru).
Samsung hasn’t acknowledged the issue yet, but as YouTuber Shane Craig, who managed to reproduce the bug, puts it, opening and then backing out of the Edge Panel settings seems to be making the Galaxy Z Fold 7 forget that it’s in a 90:10 split mode, thus allowing users to open one more app to the side.
If you have a Galaxy Z Fold 7, you can try this, too. However, don’t expect it to work flawlessly. For example, the resizing of Windows doesn’t work perfectly, as confirmed by both the Reddit user and Craig. While it doesn’t work as you’d like, this bug is a strong indication that it isn’t that difficult for Samsung to introduce this to One UI 8.
The bug may also have accidentally revealed what Samsung was planning to announce later. Be that as it may, we hope Samsung introduces its version of Open Canvas with some uniqueness, just as it did while copying Apple’s Depth Effect.
