Google’s latest Pixel 10 series offers satellite connectivity, and that doesn’t really come as a surprise. However, what Google just announced most definitely does. Up until now, Google’s satellite connectivity has been limited to texts via Google Messages. That, however, will change starting August 28th, the day the base Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and Pixel 10 Pro XL are slated to hit store shelves.
The tech giant, in a surprise announcement on X (via 9to5Google), indicated that the Pixel 10 series “will be the first to offer voice and video calls on @WhatsApp over a satellite network.” Even T-Mobile, which has been praised for its T-Satellite service, only offers SMS and MMS functionality.
If and when the functionality will expand to older Pixel devices remains unclear. This is simply Google unlocking data access via satellite to grant WhatsApp access, so we wouldn’t be surprised if the functionality rolls out to older Pixels in the future. In the short-term, however, this could be Google’s way of setting its new flagships apart from other devices in the Pixel line.
Texts likely to remain exclusive to Google Messages
Elsewhere, while the announcement does indicate that users will be able to make voice and video calls, It did not mention whether users could send messages via satellite. Messaging over satellite will likely remain a Google Messages exclusive. Additionally, according to the fine print in Google’s announcement, “the service is limited to participating carriers and additional charges may apply.” Who the said carriers are remains to be seen.
Regardless, the move will not only make the Pixel 10 series more desirable but should also help WhatsApp increase its presence in the US.
