Google Pixel 10 series UWB features and uses

All Google Pixel 10 Pro models — including the Pro, Pro XL, and Pro Fold — feature Ultra-Wideband (UWB), while the standard Pixel 10 is the only one without it.

It may sound like another line on the spec sheet on paper, but it unlocks many smart, intuitive features in practice.

Here’s a look at the tech behind UWB, how it works, and how the Pixel phone can use it.

Understanding the basics of UWB technology

UWB is a wireless protocol that gives your phone spatial awareness. Your phone sends short, low-power radio pulses across various frequencies.

When the pulses hit another UWB device, such as a smart tag, that device sends a return pulse.

The Pixel then measures the round-trip flight time of these signals to the nanoseconds.

It helps to compare it to wireless tech you already know. If Bluetooth can tell you your device is nearby, UWB can tell it’s two meters away, on your left, next to the sofa.

Most wireless tech relies on signal strength, but UWB works differently.

Signal strength can be tricked by hackers who amplify a signal.

However, since light speed is constant and added relays create detectable timing errors, it’s difficult to fake and spoof a UWB connection.

A UWB chip makes finding lost items (given it has UWB) easier. This could be your earbuds, smartwatch, or a smart tag in your wallet.

Instead of a vague dot on a map, UWB phones switch to a find nearby mode when you are within about 20 meters.

From there, a large arrow appears on-screen and points to the object. A distance counter updates in real time.

“3.2 meters… 2.1 meters… 1.5 meters…” As you move closer, the phone increases vibration feedback and guides you with stronger pulses until you reach the item.

Pixel can store a UWB-powered digital car key. The convenience would be good, but the bigger upgrade is security.

Legacy keyless systems can be vulnerable to relay attacks. Thieves amplify a fob’s signal from a distance to trick the car into unlocking.

UWB helps prevent this by verifying true proximity with flight time measurements. The car can estimate the phone’s position to within centimeters.

It will unlock only when you are beside the door and start when the phone is inside the cabin. It is the secure, low-friction keyless entry experience that UWB aims for.

This feature requires a vehicle that supports and mandates the use of UWB. Adoption is growing, with manufacturers like BMW, Hyundai, Kia, and Mercedes-Benz rolling out compatible models.

The UWB chip in your Pixel lets smart home devices track where you are and how you move. With centimetre-level accuracy, it improves room-aware automations.

Lights, speakers, and thermostats respond as you enter or exit a space. This goes beyond basic motion sensing.

UWB can distinguish between rooms and detect your movement direction, making automations more context-aware.

For example, music and light can fade out in one room and continue in the next as you walk.

Smart locks can also use UWB for hands-free, secure access like digital car keys.

UWB improves file and link transfers with Pixel

The UWB chip makes device-to-device connections feel natural. Instead of digging through menus or sharing sheets, bringing two devices close together triggers the connection.

Apple popularized this with NameDrop, which lets you point one iPhone at another to share contact details.

On Android, Google has Quick Share as a unified way to send files, links, and photos to nearby devices.

The feature uses Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Direct for file transfer, but UWB allows faster device discovery.

A UWB-equipped Pixel can transfer media to a Pixel Tablet when the devices are close.

UWB detects precise proximity and orientation, automatically triggering a Google Cast handoff, with no menus or extra taps.

This feature works with popular streaming platforms like Spotify and YouTube.

However, with wider support, UWB could make media handoff work across more apps and formats.

UWB shapes the future of connected devices

A UWB chip is not a single feature. It is the mechanism that allows a class of intuitive, location-aware tools and IoT devices. That is why the Swiss Army knife metaphor fits.

As more devices, from TVs and speakers to cars and city infrastructure, join the UWB ecosystem, interactions could become richer and more seamless.

We may be on the cusp of contextual computing, where technology responds to taps and swipes as well as our presence.
