In a move that addresses two concerns at once — user demand and a regulatory push for a safer digital landscape for children, Spotify is now expanding the availability of its ‘Managed Accounts’ feature to more countries.
After undergoing a successful pilot launch in countries like New Zealand, Sweden, Denmark, Spain, Mexico, and more, Managed Accounts are now finally making their way to the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, and the Netherlands.
For those unaware, Managed Accounts, as the name suggests, allows Spotify Premium Family plan members to extend their paid subscription to young listeners (under 13) in their family. Said users get to enjoy many of the core features that define Spotify.
At Spotify, we want to give parents and kids the ability to explore music together, from introducing children to the same songs you loved at their age, to helping guide their individual discovery. Every child is different, and every family’s journey is unique, so we’ve been evolving our tools to help caregivers share music in a way that feels right for them.
Protect your own algorithm
Parents or guardians managing the account, on the other hand, still retain control with features like:
- Explicit Content filters.
- The ability to control and restrict the playback of specific artists and songs.
- A toggle to hide video and Canvas (short looping videos accompanying songs).
- No access to age-gated features like Messages, alongside limited interactivity and social functionality.
It’s also worth noting that the Managed Account’s listening habits will not pollute the family’s shared listening data. Similarly, it won’t skew your annual Spotify Wrapped results either.
To set up a managed account for a young one in your family, ensure that you’re on a Spotify Premium Family plan. If so, head to the account page on your Spotify app and select ‘Add a Member.’ From there, select the option to “Add a listener aged under 13 (or local market equivalent),” and follow the on-screen instructions.
