Google Wallet update makes managing tickets and cards a breeze

Google Wallet now lets users give custom nicknames, up to 25 characters, to their digital passes like loyalty cards, event tickets, and transit passes. This update helps users stay organized and makes it easier to find passes in the app.

The feature was first announced in April. To add a nickname, open a pass, tap the three-dot menu in the top right, and choose “Add a nickname.” As per 9to5Google, the nickname will show up under the pass title on the main screen, making it easier to spot. This is especially helpful for people who have several passes from the same provider, like different transit cards or loyalty memberships.

Beyond nicknames

A smarter, more proactive Wallet

This update adds to Google’s earlier work on making pass management better. Earlier this year, Google Wallet launched the “Everything Else” feature, which lets users create digital passes for many items just by taking a photo. It works for things like business cards, IDs, library cards, and vehicle registrations, using Google’s AI to read the information. Right now, this feature is only available in the US.

Google Wallet has also improved its notifications. Now, users get “Nearby Passes” alerts when they are close to places where they might use a saved pass, like stores or event venues. With one tap, they can open the right pass, making it easier to use digital passes while out and about.

The service has also added new tools for developers. Now, passes received through Gmail can be added automatically if Gmail’s Smart features are turned on. Merchants using Smart Tap can also invite users to join their loyalty programs right after a purchase, making sign-up faster and easier.

Overall, Google Wallet is becoming more than just a place to store your cards. With features like nicknames and other recent updates, the app now offers a smoother and more convenient experience.
