Over the years, migrating from an iOS device to an Android, and vice versa, has become a far easier process. However, it is still cumbersome enough to be considered annoying and clunky.
Currently, the best way to migrate from an iOS device to Android with all your data intact is to utilize the Android Switch app. Alternatively, some might find transferring data using a USB cable to be more convenient. Even with said methods, though, your precious on-device app data, including settings for specific apps, game saves, and akin, are not transferred over.
Apple knows that this is an issue for those migrating from iOS to Android, and it just published information about a dedicated framework designed to solve exactly that (via 9to5Mac).
The framework is called AppMigrationKit, and it will work with devices running iOS 26.1 and iPadOS 26.1 and later. The framework is currently in beta. Once available, it will allow you to “perform a one-time transfer of your app’s on-device data to or from a device running another platform.”
It’s not really for you
The framework is essentially for app developers. It will allow them to add support within their apps to export local user data like settings and offline content, allowing it to cleanly be moved over when migrating to Android (and the other way around).
For what it’s worth, the new framework isn’t being tested without reason. It comes soon after Apple enthusiasts spotted the Cupertino-based tech giant working on a native ‘Transfer to Android‘ option baked right into the iPhone’s Settings.
It’s worth noting that the new framework is still in testing and part of early beta builds. There’s no official release date for it just yet. Additionally, even after it does land in the hands of developers, users will have to wait for the app makers to integrate the framework into their applications (some may choose not to adopt it right away), so it’s not an overnight solution. However, just the fact that Apple is working on a seamless migration path that will make app data transfers easier is a win for consumers.
