Spotify is the world’s most popular music streaming service, used by millions of people daily. Now, if you own a Samsung or Android phone, chances are you must have been hit by a frustrating bug that’s causing the app to randomly crash or freeze.
Over the past two weeks, Spotify’s forums have been flooded with complaints from Android users — particularly those with Samsung and Pixel phones — about constant app crashes and random freezes that make the app nearly unusable. The issue typically happens when the device is connected to Wi-Fi, while the app works perfectly fine on mobile data.
Using a different Wi-Fi network does not work, and the app continues to crash. The issue appears to affect a sizable number of Spotify Android users, but it is not exactly widespread (via 9to5Google). While Spotify’s team is “currently looking into this” matter, there’s no word on when it will roll out a fix.
I haven’t run into crashes on my Xiaomi 15 Ultra, though Spotify seems to be running slower than normal.
Turn off Wi-Fi or downgrade to an older build
If you are a heavy Spotify user and facing random app crashes, you can uninstall and reinstall the app to see if that solves the problem. However, the workaround does not particularly have a high success rate. Alternatively, if you have a generous mobile data limit, just stream music over LTE or 5G until Spotify gets its act together.
Some users suspect Wi-Fi speakers are causing the random crashes and freezes. If you have one connected, try turning it off and reconnecting your phone to Wi-Fi to see if Spotify still crashes.
If this fails as well, your only option is to switch to another music streaming service until Spotify gets to the bottom of the problem and releases a fix. Or, if you really want to stick to Spotify, downgrade to an older build from a few weeks ago.
This is not the first time Spotify Android users have run into such a frustrating bug. In July 2024, some users complained about their Pixel device crashing right after playing a song on Spotify.
